For many visitors who come to Belitung, this is the first question on your mind. The Belitung language has some uniqueness, and is actually similar to Indonesian because the basis is Malay. For simplicity most of the existing words the letter "a" is replaced with "e". For example the word "price" becomes "harge", "flower" becomes "bunge". In addition, there is another uniqueness, namely the letter "u" is replaced with "o", for example "kampung" becomes "kampong", and finally "Belitung" becomes "Belitong". So Belitong is the pronunciation of Belitung in the local language. Belitong in the colonial era was known as Billitone.
The word Belitong was first popularized out of Belitung by Andrea Hirata in the novel Laskar Pelangi. In the novel, Andrea uses the word Belitong, even the same mention is also used in the film Laskar Pelangi. But, later the word Belitong began to be used with a more unique meaning, namely as a unifier. On the island of Belitung, there are two regencies, namely Belitung Regency (West) and East Belitung Regency. East Belitung is a regency resulting from the expansion of the territory, which previously there was only one regency, namely, Belitung Regency. So to continue to unite the identity of the Belitung people, the people there named them Belitong people, meaning people from the island of Belitung, regardless of which district they came from.

Some families still hold noble titles in the past, which usually have the title "kiagus", similar to noble titles from Palembang. In the past, there have been several sultanates in Belitung, namely the Blok sultanate, the Badau sultanate, the Buding sultanate and the Sijok sultanate. If you come on vacation to Belitung, you will see the population of people of Chinese descent look more than other regions in Indonesia, although it remains a minority group in Belitung. Even the Belitung Chinese people still use their native language a lot. But if you have chinese skills, you don't be happy just yet, because the language of the Belitung Chinese people is from the Hakka (Hokkien) dialect. Unlike the Chinese descendants on the island of Java, the Chinese people came to Belitung only at the end of the 19th century. They were imported by the Dutch from Yunan province because of their expertise in tin mining. So the origin of the Chinese community in Belitung is from tin laborers.
